What percentage of forex trading volume is speculative?

Does anybody have any estimates on this topic? I'm wondering what part of the market are participants who buy currency in order to sell it at better price and what part are others - i.e. people and institutions who need currency for other reasons. Can we expect any credible source for such information? EDIT: Ideally such figures should exclude HFT as retail traders do not compete with it anyway (at least I assume so).

MT5 international foreign exchange trading platform, recently the foreign exchange gold market is also on the rise

What is the foreign exchange market?Foreign exchange market (FOREx market) refers to the place or network where foreign exchange transactions take place.Mainly between local currency and foreign currency, foreign exchange transactions between different currencies. The foreign exchange market can be divided into two parts, namely the inter-bank foreign exchange market and the retail foreign exchange market.Interbank foreign exchange market can also be acquired as an inter-bank wholesale foreign exchange market, which is the uppermost market in foreign exchange transactions and the market for foreign exchange transactions among Banks, forming a relatively centralized foreign exchange market. In the interbank market, there is no such thing as margin trading.Retail forex market refers to the market between forex trading institutions and their clients. The most basic class in this market is individual traders, characterized by wide and dispersed distribution.
The modern international foreign exchange market is generally distributed in major cities in the world, such as London, New York, Paris, Vertical, Zurich, Wellington, Tokyo, Singapore, Hong Kong and other world-famous financial centers and foreign exchange centers. The interconnections and influence of these centers form a foreign exchange network covering the whole world.Due to time zones and time differences, such a horizontal global market is almost always open and close one after another, forming a circular 24-hour foreign exchange market. In the global market, the UK, the US, Singapore, Hong Kong and Japan accounted for 77% of the global forex trading volume. At present, China's foreign exchange market is a market system centered on the inter-bank market.
In the foreign exchange market, the exchange rate fluctuation refers to the exchange rate of changing currencies. The change in exchange rate is the decrease in the value of one currency and the increase in the value of another currency.A currency does not become a waste of paper, or even a dwindling currency, but it will always represent a certain value, unless the abolition of the currency is declared. You've had negative interest rates, you've had a plunge in stocks, you've had zero futures, you've had real estate, you've had a question mark as an investment hedge, and in many cases rents may not be worth the mortgage index. For domestic investors, the currency market is the most "clean" speculative market with little risk but great opportunity.
Investors need not bother in the performance of each stock, futures long-short don't have to worry about both sides of the insider trading, daily turnover of huge, make any also does not have the dealer's courage, soros, buffett can learn about the information, as well as ordinary investors can learn, global investors and speculators are in the same time looking at the same price and graphics, several thousands of marketmakers network trading platform and the world millions of investors and speculators have together.

Is trading forex 'easier' due to lack of centralized volume?

So I'm pretty new to all this. I am wondering if lack of centralized exchange for forex makes it 'easier' to trade it. I'm thinking this because this is one less 'edge' that anyone can have. I feel like the less edge others can have, the simpler it might be for everyone.
Obviously an extreme example, but let's say if charts are all that anyone have to base their trades on, then everyone will be looking for the same patterns. So then there is a higher probability of those patterns working out. Am I wrong?

In case you forgot , or don’t yet know

I think many new to this sub are missing the point, the biggest selling point and most earnest reason why this project is such a great thing. “Un bank the banked” is something I didn’t quite understand at first but upon deeper examination had me find a moment of understanding.
If you are looking to cop yourself a lambo off crypto, you are thinking way too small for a project like this. The concept is not just transaction fees so you can post pictures of your McMansion on Facebook. “Un banking the banked” with the Omisego network will allow the common man to have some of financial sovereignty most have never really known. Banks do serve a purpose and will likely be a fixture forever as they do provide some beneficial services but the model is outdated. The point is the ability to choose what you want and not have it be dictated by some external entity because you weren’t given a choice. (This is the founding principal behind bitcoin and why it is such an amazing creation)
The idea here is the next in evolution of that school of thought. Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies are vehicles. Ethereum and the other platforms are the playing fields and the Omisego network aims to be the road between it all. A road where you can enter and exit anything without obstacles (fiat , crypto , sky miles , whatever other digital assets exist)
Yes , the idea forex trading volume make me excited to pay off my student loan, but the amount of cool opportunities these new systems will provide for the future are more exciting than what I want to do on the weekend in a fast car.
I was reading an article or watching a video a couple of weeks ago where someone was talking about how a potential power shift power like this hasn’t existed since the dawn of oil....oil. The people who pioneer this space don’t think like those people did . Guys like Vitalik aren’t in it for the lambos (which they deserve for actually creating things instead of just trading) they want to change the world for the better , and I see that same thing in this project which makes me feel good to be a part of it.
Yes we all want to be rich , but if you can be rich and make other people’s lives better that’s a beautiful thing. When everyone wins , you have synergy , and I think that’s what they are looking to create.
Anyway , that’s my rant.

Forex Sentiment Data Overview, it's Application in Algo trading, and Free Sample Data

From Commitment of Traders (COT) to the Daily Sentiment Index (DSI), to the Put/Call ratio and more, sentiment data has long been highly sought after by both professional and retail traders in the mission to get an edge in the market. Equity and futures traders can access this market data relatively easily due to the centralization of the market they are trading.

But what about Forex traders? There is no single centralized exchange for the Foreign Exchange market therefore sentiment data is difficult to obtain and can be extremely pricey for Forex traders. Furthermore, if a trader had access to such data, the sample set may be limited and not closely reflect the actual market.

In order for Forex sentiment data to be valuable, the data must be derived from a large, far reaching sample of Forex traders. FXCM boasts important Forex trading volumes and a significant trader sample and the broker’s large sample size is one of the most representative samples of the entire retail Forex market. Therefore, the data can be used to help predict movement of the rate of an instrument in the overall market.

This sentiment data shows the retail trader positioning and is derived from the buyer-to-seller ratio among retail FXCM traders. At a glance, you can see historical and current trader positioning in the market. A positive ratio indicates there are more traders that are long for every trader that is short. A negative ratio is indicative of a higher number of traders that are short for every long trader. For example, a ratio of 2.5 would mean that there are 2.5 traders that are long for every short trader and -2.5 would mean just the opposite.

When it comes to algo trading, sentiment can be used as a contrarian indicator to help predict potential moves and locate trading opportunities. When there is an extreme ratio or net volume reading, the majority of traders are either long or short a specific instrument. It is expected that the traders who are currently in these positions will eventually close out therefore bring the ratio back to neutral. Consequently, there tends to be a sharp price movement or a reversal.

When extremes like this are present in the market, a mean reversion automated strategy can be implemented to take advantage of the moves in the market that are expected to ensue. If sentiment is skewed very high or very low, price is moving away from the mean. However, over time it is expected to regress back to the mean resulting in a more neutral reading. Neutral would be considered a number close to 1.0 or -1.0. It is recommended that a confirmation indicator or two be coded into the mean reversion strategy as well.

Free one-month sample of the historical Sentiment Data can be accessed by pasting this link in your browser https://sampledata.fxcorporate.com/sentiment/{instrument}.csv.gz and changing the {instrument}: to the pair or CFD you would like to download data for. For example, for USD/JPY data download you would use this link: https://sampledata.fxcorporate.com/sentiment/USDJPY.csv.gz.
When the file downloads, it will be a GNU zip compressed file so you will need to use a decompression utility to open it. To open the file with 7zip, open the downloads folder, click on your file, and click ‘copy path’. Then open 7Zip and paste your clipboard into the address bar and click enter. Then click the ‘extract’ button. This will open a window where you can designate a destination to copy your new csv file. Click OK, and navigate back to your file explorer to see your csv file.
You can find more details about the sentiment data by checking out FXCM’s Github page: https://github.com/fxcm/MarketData/tree/masteSentiment

This is the best tl;dr I could make, original reduced by 73%. (I'm a bot)
LONDON - Britain has extended its lead in the global currency trading business in the two years since it voted to leave the European Union, in another sign London is likely to continue to be one of the world's top two financial centers even after Brexit.
Reuters' analysis, based on surveys released by central banks in the five biggest trading centers, shows forex trading volumes in Britain had grown by 23 percent to a record daily average of $2.7 trillion in April compared to April 2016.
"The luck of geography has helped because most of the big market moving news, whether in the U.S. or Europe, has occurred during London's trading hours," said Neil Jones, London-based head of hedge fund sales at Japan's Mizuho Bank.
These products, the largest part of Britain's currency market, are sold to customers around the world, not just the EU. Banks in Britain, including the London operations of global players, are moving some staff to European cities on expectations that they will the lose the automatic right to sell services to EU investors after Brexit.
The city's tightening grip on forex trade does not prove London won't suffer from Brexit, but it does underscore the attractiveness for banks of maintaining large international operations in the city, industry experts said.
"The FX market is effectively an offshore dollar market and offshore dollars are always going to be looking for an international home, and that's London."

A good volume indicator for trading forex?

I am new to Forex and am currently developing my forex trading system. Basically the system comprises of an entry indicator, trend indicator, volume indicator and exit indicator in addition to extensive risk management rules.
The difficulty I am having with is the volume indicator. The system is currently 60% profitable; however after backtesting I see that the losses are primarily stemming when the market is stagnant and there is not much volatility.
I have tried out volatility and volume indicators such as
MFI CMF On Balance Volume
with strategies such as zero line cross or crossover a threshold but haven't had much success.
Anybody else run into the problem? Have you found a suitable volume indicator to prevent entering in trades when the markets are tight? Any thoughts on this are very much appreciated.
